Our History

Events & Info

First Baptist Church had its beginnings in S.F. Peter's store in 1892. It was organized the first Sunday in May that year with 13 members present. The organizing ministers were the Rev. W.F. Burton, County Missionary; Rev. B.S. Gray; and the Rev. J.D. Ballard. Sanger was a small town consisting of only a couple of stores, a livery stable, a hotel, the railroad station, a school, and a few residences.  Until 1896, the church held its meetings in the local school house. Seeing the need for a permanent place of worship, the founders along with the congregation, built the first church building in the north part of Sanger.  The building built in 1896 was sold and a new concrete block building was built by the remaining church members in 1906. This building continues to stand today and is located just south of Sanger's downtown business section.

In May of 1960, the congregation voted to build a new church. A site was selected and purchased in the south part of Sanger. On October 16, 1960, the church held its ground breaking ceremony and on May 18, 1961, the new church was ready for occupancy. The membership at that time was 386. The congregation of the First Baptist Church worshipped in it new building until 1961, when they built a brick church, and later a parsonage, at the present location of the church. As the church continued to grow in membership and spirit, it entered a campaign to finance a new sanctuary, remodeling the rest of the building for educational purposes and for offices. The United We Build Campaign began on March 25, 1994, for a preschool children's building.

Today, marks a new era in the history of FBC. With the addition of a new Family Life Center, new kitchen facilities, and future growth by the adition of an Education building, we are seeing exciting things around here all of the time.
